What to Expect in Your First Counseling Session
Acknowledge the First-Session Jitters
Starting counseling can be a big step for a lot of people, and it's normal to experience some uncomfortable feelings such as anxiety, hesitation, or self-consciousness. Meeting someone for the first time and talking about struggles you may never have talked about before can be a scary thing. I am here to help ease some of that anxiety so you can get the most out of your counseling journey. The first session is not a “fix-all” session, but a chance for me to get to know you and gather information so we can come up with a good game plan together.
It's a Conversation, Not an Interrogation
During our first session, you will experience more of a conversation rather than an interview. Counseling should be a space where you can feel free to talk about anything and feel comfortable doing that. This is a chance for you to ask me questions, as well as for me to ask you questions. We will take time to understand where you are in your journey and how I can best help. One important point is that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to talk. I will guide the session so you feel comfortable and confident.
What We'll Talk About
The first session is really a chance for us to get to know each other and discuss how I can best help. If this is your first time in counseling, I will take some time to explain the process and what to expect, so you feel confident as we go forward. We may start by going over some of the opening paperwork as well as me telling you a little about myself, so you know more in depth who you are talking to.
From there, we will get into the "why now," or "what got you to call in and schedule a session?" This is a chance to discuss and talk about your story as well as goals you would like to achieve in therapy. I may ask questions about your background to get a holistic view of you. You can share whatever you like, as well as what you are comfortable with. During the end of our first session, I will introduce you to my therapeutic approach and how it will work with what you are going through. This may include ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) or mindfulness strategies.
What You'll Walk Away With
At the end of our first session, you will walk away with a clear understanding of the counseling process and how it will work going forward. You will feel encouraged and confident that progress will be made as you go forward and have a clear outline of how we will achieve what you are looking for. Lastly, you will leave with a feeling of hope that you can achieve what you came in for.
